Olympus Reaches New Heights in Miniaturization
with the Introduction of the
Stylus Epic Zoom 80
Olympus is proud to announce the newest camera in the award winning Stylus Series, the elegant, ultracompact Stylus Epic Zoom 80. More than 10 million Stylus Series cameras have been sold since the series was launched in 1991. Featuring a 38-80mm zoom lens, the Stylus Epic Zoom is the smallest 35mm zoom camera in the world. The sliding lens barrier securely covers the lens when it is closed, creating a sleek surface that enhances both aesthetic appeal and portability.
The high performance Stylus Epic Zoom 80 is the culmination of a relentless pursuit of compactness and high performance in 35mm camera design. By employing advanced technologies, Olympus has made this camera even lighter and more compact, a design that actually represents a new generation of compact zoom cameras. An Olympus 38-80mm autofocus zoom lens, crafted with the precision that has made Olympus optics synonymous with superior quality, enables picture takers to photograph family events and activitieseffortlessly, at the touch of a button. This tiny camera features exceptionally trim lines and is very lightweight. Even with its’ extensive features, the Stylus Epic Zoom 80 measures only 4.5" (W) x 2.3" (H) x 1.6" (D) and weighing only 6.3 ounces.
The Stylus Epic Zoom 80 is designed with special weatherproof seals protecting it against sand and dust as well as a sudden shower or splashing. The worry-free weatherproof feature protects the camera from splashes from any directionmaking this an ideal camera for use on a rainy day, at a beach or on a ski slope.
MAIN FEATURES
High-Precision AF
Olympus chose precision aspherical elements for the Stylus Epic Zoom 80’s lenses, coupled with a high-performance 600-step maximum auto-focusing system based on a newly developed three-point, multi-active AF mechanism. Sharp, precision focusing is possible from 2 feet to infinity.
High Performance Flash
While compact and energy efficient, the newly developed flash for the Stylus Epic Zoom 80 provides brilliant, ideal illumination through minute high-pressure flash tubes encased behind a Fresnel lens and unique reflection hood. Olympus also equipped the camera with an auto-color-balancing flash function that automatically senses the wavelength of artificial light, such as fluorescent light, and then provides a compensating flash for attractive natural coloration.
Intelligent Flash System
The Epic Zoom 80 uses an intelligent flash system that draws on several types of sensor information. In addition to automatic flash modes for low lighting, it also automatically judges and compensates for backlighting and lens flare. Its auto color-balancing flash function automatically senses the wavelength of artificial light, such as fluorescent light, and produces natural, attractive photographs without color overlap.
Versatile Flash Modes
Six flash modes mean anyone can enjoy taking great pictures.
- Auto
In low light and backlit situations, the flash fires automatically to ensure that the illumination is appropriate. When fluorescent or other artificial light is detected, the Auto Color-Balancing Flash takes over to ensure lifelike colors.
- Redeye-Reducing Auto
Redeye is reduced by a series of pre-flashes emitted before the main flash fires. In all other aspects, this mode functions just as the auto mode.
- Fill-In
The flash always fires in this mode. It is ideal for high-contrast situations and will eliminate the harsh shadows caused by strong sunlight.
- Flash Off
This mode is the answer when flash photography is prohibited. It is also ideal for capturing a natural ambiance.
- Night Scene
This mode is great for capturing night scenes such as a cityscape in the background with a person in the foreground. While the flash illuminates the person in the foreground, an extended shutter speed will capture the night lights of the cityscape. Slowing the shutter speed to as long as 4 seconds, this mode captures both the subject in the foreground and the nighttime scenery.
- Redeye-Reducing Night Scene
This mode reduces the redeye effect in pictures taken in the Night Scene mode. Except for the addition of a series of pre-flashes, it is identical to the Night Scene mode.
Select this mode when shooting a sweeping landscape to automatically set the working distance to infinity. The flash and auto-focus are deactivated as well.
There is an optional remote control available for the Stylus Epic Zoom 80. This weatherproof remote can trigger the shutter from as far as 16 feet and can be easily slowed in the camera ’ neck strap.
The Stylus Epic Zoom 80 will be available at Olympus retailers in June, 1998 with a suggested list price of $325.00. A Stylus Epic Zoom 80 DLX will be available at selected Olympus retailers, offering the camera in a champagne gold finish with Quartz Date capability, a mid-roll switchable panorama mode and a case. The suggested list price of the Stylus Epic Zoom 80 DLX is $345.00
