The Stylus Epic Zoom 80 CF from Olympus

MELVILLE, NY (February 18, 1999)) —Olympus America, Inc. is pleased to announce the introduction of the Stylus Epic Zoom 80 CF compact camera. Marking the company's 80th anniversary, it features the world's first Confirmation Finder, an innovation that indicates the exact moment when the shutter is released.

Elegant and stylish, the new model is the smallest and lightest 35mm camera in its class. This latest addition to the Stylus Series also has a 38-80mm zoom lens and a wide array of advanced features.

The Right Feel, A Better Fit

The unprecedented Confirmation Finder momentarily darkens the viewfinder image just as the shutter is released. The effect is similar to the viewfinder blackout seen the viewfinder of an SLR when the shutter is released. Bringing easy operation and more fun to photography, this original Olympus feature goes beyond capabilities of a conventional compact camera.

A drive shaft mechanism plays a key part in a design that is the world's smallest and lightest in its class. Although it has a 38-80mm zoom lens—with magnification higher than 2x- the latest Epic Zoom 80 CF measures just 4.5 (W) x 2.3 (H) x 1.6 (D) inches and weighs only 6.5 ounces.

The design also extends the heritage of the Stylus series. The sliding lens barrier offers outstanding handling and portability, while an elegant touch of sophistication has been added to the smooth, flowing contours. The result defines a relentless pursuit of portability and friendly operation.

A high-performance aspherical lens contributes to the high resolution of the lens. Image quality is also enhanced by a high-precision 600-step AF system with a three-point Multi Active focusing system.

The Auto Color Balancing Flash automatically detects fluorescent and other artificial lighting. To ensure lifelike results, it triggers the flash automatically to minimize an unnatural color cast. With six flash modes at hand, the Stylus Epic Zoom 80 CF makes photography easier and more enjoyable in a wide range of lighting conditions.

The ultracompact body holds many other features as well. From weatherproofing to midroll selection of the panorama format, they make this the zoom compact camera for every occasion and preference.

Main Features

Unprecedented Confirmation Finder

Using an LCD system, the new Confirmation Finder momentarily darkens the field of view just as the shutter is released. Going beyond the capabilities of conventional compact cameras, the Olympus innovation combines easy operation with more fun.

Ultracompact and Ultralight

A drive shaft mechanism is a key to pocket-size dimensions of only 4.5 (W) 2.3 (H) 1.6 (D) inches- figures that make the Stylus Zoom 80 CF the world's smallest 2.1x zoom compact camera. Weighing only 6.5 ounces, the design reflects Olympus' relentless pursuit of portability and friendly handling.

38-80mm High-Performance Zoom Lens

The Epic Zoom 80 CF offers the versatility of a 38-80mm zoom lens. The high-performance aspherical lens elements not only delivers superior resolution, but contributes to smaller dimensions and lower weight.

Elegant, Eye-Catching Design

Like earlier models in the Stylus series, the new Stylus Epic Zoom 80 CF has the flowing contours and sliding lens barrier that enhances both portability and handling. Building on this heritage, the latest refinements adds another degree of elegance to create a compact camera with the style of a personal accessory. Ultracompact and lightweight, the pocket-size model is designed to be kept close at hand and to add to the fun.

High-Precision AF System Steps

Along with the aspherical lens elements, the high-precision AF system accounts for the Stylus Epic Zoom 80 CF's outstanding image quality. The system has a new Multi Active AF mechanism and a maximum of 600 steps for sharp focusing at any point from 2 feet to infinity.

Landscape Mode

Capturing the details of both the foreground and background, this mode is ideal for landscape photography.

Intelligent Variable-Power Flash System

The Intelligent Variable-Power Flash System draws on several types of sensor information. Along with triggering the auto flash mode in low light, it automatically compensates for backlighting and high-contrast situations. The Auto Color Balancing Flash function automatically senses the wavelength of fluorescent and other artificial light, producing natural and attractive photographs free from an unnatural color cast.

In low light, backlighting or artificial light, the flash fires automatically, delivering the appropriate illumination for a correct exposure.

Red-Eye Reducing
This mode reduces red-eye, a common problem with flash portraits taken in low light. When the shutter button is pressed, a series of pre-flashes is emitted before the main flash fires.

Flash Off
This mode is the answer when flash photography is prohibited. It is also ideal for capturing a natural ambiance.

The flash fires every time in this mode. It is especially helpful in eliminating unnatural shadows on a subject.

Night Scene
The intensity of the flash is determined by the foreground, while the length of the exposure is set according to the backdrop. Slowing the shutter speed to as long as 4 sec., this mode captures both the subject in the front and the background scenery.

Red-Eye Reducing Night Scene
This mode reduces the red-eye effect in pictures taken in the night scene mode. Except for a series of pre-flashes, it is identical to the night scene mode.

Worry-free weatherproofing

The weatherproofing protects against a sudden shower or splashing, offering extra reassurance in the rain or on a ski slope.

Other Features

Auto Macro
Macro shots up to B5-size (7.2 x 10.1 inches) can be taken at the 80mm telephoto setting.

Focus Lock
This convenient features keeps the subject in sharp focus no matter how the photographer adjusts the composition.

Exposure Compensation
The exposure can be adjusted +1.5 EV.

Midroll Change to the Panorama Format
A panorama picture can be taken at any point on the roll. This gives the photographer greater flexibility when shooting group shots or landscapes.

Quartz Date Function
The quartz date function can be turned on to allow the date when the picture was taken to be imprinted on the photo.

Optional Remote Control
With the optional remote control, it is easy to trigger the shutter from as far as 16.4 feet.

The suggested list price of the Stylus Epic Zoom 80 CF is $290.00
