Olympus DSU Confocal System Offers High Transmission, Excellent Optical Sectioning
Melville, NY, November 9, 2003 - Olympus has introduced the DSU spinning disk confocal system, which is designed to provide excellent optical sectioning and motorized operation with the flexibility of an arc lamp excitation source. The DSU system uses a proprietary, patent-pending slit disk technology to offer enhanced signal transmission, while maintaining excellent confocality. The technology allows an arc lamp excitation source to be used, offering maximum wavelength flexibility in an economical package.
The DSU disk and optical components are UV compatible and deliver outstanding performance down to 350nm. Disk operation is motorized, allowing a computer to switch remotely between widefield and confocal imaging modes. The system offers full-frame CCD image capture at 15-to-20 frames per second with a streamlined single-disk, opto-mechanical design.
The DSU's disk is covered with an alternating pattern of vertical and horizontal slits. Five disks are available, each with varying slit width and spacing; they offer flexibility to accommodate varied objective magnifications, numerical apertures and specimen thicknesses. Removing and changing disks is easy, and confocal imaging can be achieved with objectives that range in magnification from 10x to 100x.
The system can be combined with a motorized microscope such as the inverted Olympus IX81 for 3D confocal imaging. The images can be deconvolved using 3i's SlideBook™ and other advanced deconvolution software packages. The DSU confocal workstation is designed to be affordable for an individual researcher, but is also well suited for a multi-user facility, where it will complement other microscope methodologies.
