New Olympus DS-2 Digital Voice Recorder Delivers High Quality Recording In StereoIdeal for Interviews, Compact Recorder Can Store Up to 22 Hours of Audio
Melville, New York, January 6, 2005 - Olympus Imaging America Inc, the leading manufacturer of digital voice recorders in the United States, proudly introduces the new DS-2 Digital Voice Recorder, a high-performance audio recording tool that can dramatically enhance the workflow of all professional users who demand world-class recording quality and extensive functionality.
"We've made the DS-2 attractive, compact and ergonomic with rounded corners and easy-to-use buttons," said Andy Flagg, senior national sales manager for Olympus Imaging America Inc. "While keeping operation simple, we've integrated high-performance features and a stereo microphone for recording interviews, so it's the ideal instrument for professionals who rely on their voice recorder to get the job done."
Designed to Do More
The DS-2 is truly designed to do more. With a built-in stereo microphone, the DS-2 records in stereo to pick up both sides of a conversation with equal clarity, which is ideal for interview situations. Thanks to 64MB internal memory, the DS-2 can record 22 hours of audio in the long play mode, and at higher-quality settings it can record for up to 4 hours. Files are saved in the high compression file formats DSS and WMA, and users can easily switch between five quality modes to suit their requirements.
The included user-friendly DSS Player software facilitates the archiving, editing and further processing of the recordings. For those who want even more performance from the DS-2, an upgrade to DSS Player Plus is available for purchase from www.OlympusAmerica.com for $9.95. The upgrade allows the DS-2 to seamlessly integrate with voice recognition software like Via Voice version 10 or Dragon Naturally Speaking version 8 (for Windows OS). The upgrade also enables enhanced editing capabilities so users can split files as they see fit, then bind clips together to create new audio files. With DSS Player Plus, you can also configure the settings of the DS-2 on your computer, rather than inputting them on the recorder itself. When sent to friends via the Internet, files can be opened and listened to with DSS Player Lite, free reader software for DSS files also available online from Olympus.
Designed for Excitement
Users of the DS-2 can virtually control time with different playback settings that are ideal for transcribing dictation. After capture, the playback speed can be adjusted at 12 different speed levels (8 levels in fast playback and 4 levels in slow playback). With slow playback users will be less likely to rewind to hear what was said, and with fast playback they can skip ahead to the essential sections. The DS-2 also has a skip playback function so users can jog through recordings by time increments to locate key parts of a recording without holding down fast-forward or rewind. In addition, with the Repeat Playback function, the DS-2 can repeatedly play back a particular user-selected section of audio recording. All Playback function is also available so all of the files in a folder will play back without stopping.
The DS-2 can even record just when you need it to, and save battery life in the process. The Variable Control Voice Actuator (VCVA) setting ensures that recording begins only when the sound is sensed. For instances when you know you'll need to start recording at a specific time, Timer Recording is also available. It works by setting a beginning time to start recording and an end time to stop recording. This feature is valuable for those who do not want to call attention to the fact that they're making a recording by pushing the DS-2's record button, or when you know you need to capture something at a specific time.
Whether in the hand or tucked away in a shirt or a jacket pocket, the DS-2's slim, ergonomic body with elegant, brushed silver finish on the face and black on the sides is sure to appeal to anyone who appreciates beautiful design in a package they can take anywhere. Measuring a mere 4.82" x 1.48" x 0.69" (H x W x D) and only 2.82 ounces, the compact, lightweight DS-2 fits comfortably in the hand of the on-the-go professional.
The DS-2 recorder features a large, backlit, full-dot, easy-to-read LCD screen that reveals file information, recording time and events. A speaker for audio playback is located on the back of the recorder. The key buttons for Record, Play, Stop, Fast-Forward and Rewind are on the face of the recorder and big enough to press easily. Other buttons for selecting folders, erasing and other secondary functions are located on the side of the recorder.
The DS-2 has five separate file folders with 199 files in each folder to allow users to organize nearly 1,000 files according to personalized subjects, such as "work," "personal," and "to do." Folders and files can all be named by using the DSS Player software in a personal computer, or on the DS-2 itself. You can put a comment up to 100 characters long in a file or choose the one of 10 preset templates such as Priority or Private. This feature helps you identify each file in the recorder itself or on the PC after you download it.
Alarm playback can also be programmed for meetings, dates, show reminders or wake-up calls. The user simply dictates reminders into the DS-2, such as "Time to depose the witness!" or "Time to hit the links!" and assigns a time for this message to go off like an alarm clock alarm.
Particularly relevant moments in an interview, briefing or lecture may be flagged - either during or after recording - using the index marks for quick retrieval. To prevent accidental deletion important files may be locked.
Designed for You
Back at the PC or Mac, the USB docking station enables quick downloading or uploading of the voice files. The DS-2 Digital Voice Recorder has up to 18 hours of continuous operation made possible by the long battery life of two AAA batteries.
The DS-2 will be available from January 2005. It comes with USB Cable and Docking Station, Stereo Earphones, Carrying Case, Batteries, DSS Player Software and Instruction Manual.
