Olympus SZX2 Stereo Microscope Series Offers Largest Zoom Ratio, Highest Resolution

Center Valley, PA, June 23, 2006 - Stereo microscope users can see more detail, capture more image information and work more comfortably than before with the Olympus SZX2 series of stereo microscopes. The series, which Olympus has completely redesigned using the input of researchers worldwide, offers the largest zoom ratio (16.4:1) and the highest resolution available in a life science stereo microscope. There are two microscopes in the series: the SZX16, for research stereo fluorescence and other high-level life science applications, and the SZX10, for both advanced and standard research requirements such as selecting and sorting specimens.

The SZX16 research stereo microscope offers the user unprecedented viewing for fluorescence and other advanced applications. Its objectives offer higher numerical apertures (NAs), including a unique 2x objective with an NA of 0.3, producing a resolution of 900 line pairs per millimeter. This objective not only offers much higher resolution for enhanced imaging; it has a correction collar that corrects for up to 5mm of aqueous media. The collar compensates for the varying refractive indices of water, air and cellular media when imaging; it is the first such correction collar designed for a stereo microscope. In addition, there is a 1x objective with an NA of 0.15, which is the highest NA for any commercially available stereo objective of this magnification.

A comprehensive range of parfocal objectives (0.5x, 1x, 1.6x and 2x), combined with smooth, trouble-free zooming from 3.5x (using the 0.5x objective) to 230x (using the 2x objective), means the SZX16 user can easily move from whole organism to cellular level and back without complex adjustments. The new near-vertical fluorescence illuminator offers five filter positions and significantly improves signal intensity for extraordinarily bright fluorescence observation even with dimly fluorescing specimens.

In addition, the SZX16 offers a variety of features for user-friendly operation. Its high depth of field comes from an enhanced stereo convergence angle that also helps reduce eye fatigue and allows the user to enjoy the benefits of the higher NAs without losing depth of field. The system creates more natural, vivid and true-to-color images for viewing and documentation. For even greater user comfort, a tilting trinocular head is available.

The SZX16’s base has been made cooler, lower and more ergonomic as well. The brightfield mirror rotates 360 degrees, making it easier to work with Zebrafish and similar specimens. The LED base is only 1˝ inches high, very cool, and lasts up to 13,000 hours. With flicker-free performance, its color temperature is also constant, so no white balance adjustment is necessary. It even allows oblique, DIC-like images to be generated for those who require additional contrast techniques beyond brightfield and darkfield.

The SZX10 offers a 10x zoom range, and is available with eight objectives. The SZX10 also features the improved depth of field, enhanced new base, comfortable viewing and many other features of the SZX16. Its bright, true-color, three-dimensional, distortion-free images support both the routine work of identification, comparison and selection, and also more advanced scientific applications.
