Olympus Broadcasts the First Inter-Continental Surgery in High-Definition
Orangeburg, NY, November 21, 2006 - Olympus, a global leader in designing and delivering advanced and innovative healthcare solutions, broadcast the first live endoscopic surgery performed in high definition (HD) during the 35th Annual AAGL Global Congress of Minimally Invasive Gynecology.
The advanced laparoscopic operation, performed by Thomas L. Lyons M.D. from the Center for Women’s Care & Reproductive Surgery, included a laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy. The session also featured Prof. Dr. med. M. Possover from the University of Cologne in Cologne, Germany who performed a laparoscopic excision of extensive endometriosis with bowel resection and a nerve sparing technique. These live sessions were transmitted in HD via satellite from Northside Hospital in Atlanta, GA and Cologne, Germany to the Paris Las Vegas Hotel where the AAGL Global Congress was taking place.
The equipment employed during the procedures included the Olympus EVIS EXERA II™ Universal Platform and the award winning HD EndoEYE™ Video Laparoscope, both of which help to form the only complete HD imaging chain. Compared to conventional systems, highdefinition endoscopy provides doctors with a much more detailed, sharper, and realistic image resulting from a higher pixel count and density. Consequently, the higher resolution is a major advantage of HD for clinical applications. HD technology possesses exciting possibilities to progress the performance of minimally invasive surgery and represents an advancement in endoscopic technology offered only by Olympus.
