Olympus Announces C-2020 Zoom Filmless Digital CameraCOMDEX BOOTH #L5835 (LVCC)Olympus America Inc., Digital & Imaging Systems Group, the leading consumer camera manufacturer, today announced the C-2020 ZOOM 2.11 megapixel 3x zoom lens filmless digital camera. The latest addition to the award-winning Olympus filmless digital camera line, the C-2020 ZOOM includes features from the best-selling C-2000 Zoom with a 2.11 megapixel resolution (1600 x 1200 pixels), 3X optical zoom lens and infrared remote. The C-2020 ZOOM incorporates fully automatic and manual controls, with many advanced features any photo enthusiast would appreciate. Additional creative controls and features include QuickTime movie and black and white modes, a new improved wide-angle LCD and power-on dial design, manual exposure and auto exposure Bracketing (AEB). All this is packaged in a compact, ergonomically designed point and shoot body.
The C-2020 ZOOM is the first Olympus camera to offer black and white and sepia modes for shooting monochrome images. In the Blackboard/Whiteboard Mode, the appropriate exposure settings are automatically selected for capturing text and ensuring clear, visible writing on the images. ISO's of 100, 200, and 400 are user selectable, and longer, slower shutter speeds are available: up to 4 seconds at ISO 100, 2 seconds at ISO 200, 1 second in Auto ISO and 400, and up to 16 seconds in manual mode.
The new manual exposure mode allows the shutter and aperture to be selected independently giving greater creative control power to the photographer. Shutter speed from 16 sec. to 1/800 sec. can be selected along with an aperture setting of F2.0-F11 at a wide-angle focal length or F2.8-F11 at telephoto in 1/3 step increments. AEB (Auto Exposure Bracketing) offers the photographer an array of exposures (+/- stops in 1/3 step increments) to compare and select the perfect exposures for each image. Along with autofocus, manual focus is now also available for setting any focal distance between 8" to infinity. Focus can be viewed on the LCD monitor before shooting. The external flash has been improved to avoid camera-shaking and the PC sync now has an external flash mode.
The C-2020 ZOOM was built with the consumer in mind. The power control is now built into a dial, for the most convenient use. Battery power consumption has also been improved for longer usability and less frequent battery changes. The menus and control buttons on the C-2020 ZOOM are now more user-friendly with less steps to achieve a function.
Besides being a first-class photographer's camera, the C-2020 ZOOM is designed to be a digital device with many advanced features, including the QuickTime Movie shooting mode at 15 fps (320 x 240 pixels) and 60 fps (160 x 120 pixels). The images can then be uploaded onto a web site for an easy QuickTime movie. To help with movie or sequence shooting, the C-2020 Zoom even comes equipped with a remote control to take photos at the touch of button.
The wider view poly-silicon TFT LCD (114,000 pixels) allows users to view images on the 1.8" LCD from any angle. The LCD can be simultaneously seen by groups of people and images are easily viewable even in direct sunlight or lowlight conditions.
The C-2020 ZOOM provides seven levels of recording images.
Superior Olympus Camera Styling
The C-2020 ZOOM is designed by Olympus, a camera company that understands and excels in camera ergonomics. Its new colorful menu structure further enhances the end user experience. Beautifully designed with the consumer in mind, the camera is lightweight at 10.7 ounces and very compact with dimensions of 4.2" wide x 2.9" high x 2.6" deep.
Unsurpassed Optics and Image Control
Olympus digital cameras are well-known for their exceptionally high-quality images. Images captured with the C-2020 ZOOM produce photographs equivalent to that of many film-based cameras. This is achieved by a number of factors, including a truly, "world class" all glass 8-element 3x zoom (35-105mm equivalency) with a fast f2.0-f11 aperture range, low compression ratios including an uncompressed mode, and a host of other sophisticated Olympus technologies. The results from the C-2020 Zoom are truly photographic.
With the C-2020 ZOOM, users have the flexibility of using the 3X optical zoom lens with or without activating the digital telephoto mode. The digital telephoto can be used at any optical focal length with 1.6X, 2.0X, and 2.5X magnification. Use of both the optical zoom and digital telephoto can provide the equivalent of a 260mm lens (for a 35mmm camera). The built in 1.8-inch LCD display automatically activates when choosing the digital Tele/Wide, macro and either of the shutter or aperture preferred modes for through-the-lens composition and "what-you-see-is-what-you-get" results. The macro capability allows the user to get in as close as eight inches, so the C-2020 ZOOM can capture small details. By combining the Macro and Aperture shooting modes, users can move tightly in on small subjects while controlling the depth of field -- a feature close-up photography enthusiasts will appreciate.
An image inspection mode allows up to 3X magnification of images on the LCD so the user doesn't have to download images to inspect details. Images can be seen in variable magnifications of 1.5X, 2X, 2.5X or 3X. The area of inspection can even be moved around the image while inspection is in process. In the image inspection mode, the selected magnified areas of the image can to be printed directly to the Olympus P300 or P330 printer. This effectively provides cropping and enlargement in the camera. Also, since the 8, 16, 32 and 64 MB SmartMedia cards (all compatible with the C-2020 ZOOM) can save hundreds of images in one card, the LCD allows 1, 4, 9, or 16 thumbnail images to be previewed at a time, facilitating image reviews. For example, the 4-up review is prefect aids for comparing the impact of white balance and other variable settings.
Downloading Your Images Is Now Easier
The C-2020 ZOOM connects easily to a computer through the optional USB - Reader/Writer or optional FlashPathTM floppy disk adapter. The Olympus USB Reader/Writer is travel-friendly and lightweight with an ergonomic palm-sized design No hA/C adapter or batteries are ever needed and there and no moving parts. The reader is hot swappable and Plug 'N Play ready, so it's always ready for instant use. It is ideal for portability and for those users who need to quickly download image files to a computer.
C-2020 ZOOM is a Consumer Electronics Camera
The C-2020 ZOOM can be used with or without a computer. It features a standard video out connector for easy viewing of photos on a television, in addition to individual viewing on the LCD. Images can be seen by many people simultaneously on the television and can also be transferred to video tape and sent to relatives and business associates for easy viewing. Users of the C-2020 ZOOM also have the option of creating photo prints, without a computer, through the use of the Olympus P-330 Instant Photo Printer by simply removing the SmartMedia card and inserting it into the printer's own card reader.
An 8MB SmartMedia removable card is included with the camera, but additional 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64MB cards can be used so there is no restriction on the number of photos that can be captured. And all SmartMedia cards can be reused as images can be erased thousand of times.
Olympus brand SmartMedia cards are pre-formatted for immediate use in the camera, and include panorama firmware. In the panorama mode the camera locks the exposure to that of the first image in a panoramic series. The resulting panorama is evenly exposed throughout the image and seams are difficult to detect. The included QuickStitch Panorama stitching software from Enroute Imaging allows multiple images to be joined together for impressive panoramic views of difficult to capture subjects such as the Grand Canyon, the Empire State Building or for real estate and interior home photos, that even the widest angle lens can't capture.
The C-2020 ZOOM includes an 8MB Olympus brand panorama SmartMedia card, remote control, 4 AA NiMH batteries and recharger, lens cap, strap, serial cable for PC and Mac, video connection cable for TV or VCR, Adobe PhotoDeluxe image manipulation and creation software, Enroute Imaging QuickStitch panorama stitching software, Olympus Camedia Master Utility Software for downloading images from the camera, and instruction manuals. The C-2020 ZOOM will be available November 1999 with an expected street price of $899. All software supports both Windows and Macintosh computer systems.
