Are any firmware updates available for my camera?

Use the Update Camera function in the OLYMPUS Master 2 software packaged with your digital camera to find out whether firmware updates are available for your model. An Internet connection is required to perform the operation.

For detailed instructions on how to update the camera's firmware, click here.

Note: If multiple firmware updates are available for your model, it may not always be possible to update directly from the current firmware version in your camera to the latest available version. In such cases, updates must be applied in stages. For this reason, it is recommended that, after updating the camera firmware, you immediately check again for additional updates. Simply repeat the update procedure to apply subsequent updates.

What is the orange "card" bundled with my camera and how do I use it?

The “card," pictured below as packaged, is the MASD-1 card adapter.

The MASD-1 accepts microSD and microSDHC media, giving owners the option to record to those cards or to xD-Picture Card media, which is Olympus’ preferred format.

To use microSD/SDHC media in the camera, simply insert the card into the adapter and then insert the adapter into the camera's memory card slot.

Olympus maintains a list of supported microSD and microSDHC cards on its web site; click here to view it.

Will the MASD-1 let me use any microSD or microSDHC card in my camera?

Click here to view a list of microSD and microSDHC cards that can be used with the MASD-1 card adapter. This page will be updated as additional cards are evaluated.

Notes: Firmware version 1.1 or later is required for movie photography when using a 4GB or larger microSDHC card. If the camera firmware is version 1.0, recording movies to these cards may damage the card.

The PANORAMA feature does not function with microSD and microSDHC media. Also, the art editing features of the xD Pack plug-in for OLYMPUS Master 2 do not support images recorded to microSD/SDHC cards. To use these features, use Olympus brand xD-Picture Card media.

Will the MASD-1 allow me to use microSD and microSDHC media in other Olympus cameras?

MicroSD and microSDHC cards can be used only with cameras that are compatible with the MASD-1. For a list of compatible cameras, click here.

The adapter is different from xD-Picture Card media in form. It will not fit in the card slots of other cameras that are compatible with xD-Picture Card media. Forcing the MASD-1 into an incompatible camera or other device may damage it or cause the equipment to malfunction.  The data on the memory card may be destroyed.

Olympus has posted a firmware update for my camera that mentions microSDHC media. Do I need it?

Olympus recommends applying camera firmware updates whenever they are available. Updating to version 1.1 provides the following benefits:

  • Adds support for recording movies on 4GB and larger microSDHC cards. The original firmware supports recording movies only to microSD cards (2GB and smaller).
  • Extends the maximum continuous recording time of movies shot with VGA resolution and the 30 fps frame rate when using Type M+ and Type H xD-Picture Card media. With the new firmware, it is possible to record a single clip up to the card capacity, which is approximately 9 minutes for a 1GB card and 18 minutes for a 2GB card.

If movies have already been recorded with the original firmware (1.0) on a 4GB or larger microSDHC card, the card must be formatted before it can be used with the new firmware. Back up the contents of the card to a computer or other device. Then, format the card in the camera using the FORMAT function. Formatting cards deletes all data stored on the cards, including images and data recorded using other devices.

The camera does not power on. Why?

The battery may be dead or underpowered.

If the battery is completely drained, the camera will not power on when the Power button is pressed. If the battery is nearly drained, the camera may briefly display a Battery Empty error message and then power off, or it may power on and then quickly power off without displaying the error.  In either case, charge the battery using the LI-50C battery charger bundled with the camera.

Be sure to properly align the arrows on the bundled battery with the arrow on the battery charger, and take care to see that the "+" and "-" signs align properly. If the battery is inserted improperly, the battery will not be charged.

For illustrated instructions on how to properly insert the battery into the charger, please see "How do I charge the LI-50B lithium-ion battery?"
