Why are there so many quality settings?

Different quality settings are used for different purposes; for example, lower quality settings can be used to e-mail pictures because of its small file size. Higher quality settings are used for printing photo quality images.

How can I get traditional photo prints from my digital camera?

Most photo processing centers or digital printing Kiosks can make traditional photo prints from a digital camera. There are also many on-line photo processors which conveniently deliver prints by mail. You can also make prints yourself if you have a photo quality printer like the Olympus P-400 printer.

What is the Macro function used for?

The Macro function allows you to take close-up pictures. Use the Macro mode when you are 8.4” to 19.2” away from your subject.

How do I make a Panorama picture?

You can easily make panorama pictures with your D-390 by “stitching” together multiple pictures. First, activate the panorama mode on the camera by selecting Mode Menu - Camera - Panorama. Take your pictures while making sure to overlap the edges of the images. Download your pictures to a computer and then use the “Panorama” function in Camedia Master to stitch them together. For more detailed information, please refer to the camera documentation.

Can I add sound to a movie made with my D-390?

What is an xD-Picture Card?

The xD-Picture card is the memory card where the D-390 stores the pictures. xD-Picture Cards come in a variety of sizes currently ranging from 16MB through 256MB. Larger capacity xD cards allow you to store more pictures.

Do I need to have a computer to use my digital camera?

You can show off your camera pictures by using the LCD monitor or by connecting your camera to a television. There are also many photo processing centers that can make traditional photo prints directly from your camera’s media card. However, to realize the full capabilities of your digital camera, a computer is recommended.

The best way to conserve battery power is to limit the use of the LCD monitor.

Why does the camera reset all my settings every time I turn it off?

The D-390 allows you to choose if you want the camera to retain your settings or to default the settings. In the camera menu, there is a function called “All Reset”. If the selection is ON, the camera will default all settings each time the camera is powered on/off. If the selection is set to OFF, the camera will remember all of the settings that have been made.

Where is the Reference Manual for the D-390?

The Reference Manual is located on the Camedia Master CD-ROM and is available in four languages (English, French, Spanish, and German. The manual can be viewed on your computer screen or printed on your printer.

What settings should I use to get the best picture quality?

The best picture quality setting on the D-390 is SHQ (Super High Quality). The SHQ file is the largest of all four quality settings. The image file size is approximately 786K.

What is the video output used for?

The video output is used for viewing images from your camera to a TV. A slideshow can be accomplished by using the camera hooked to the TV or recorded from a VCR.

When taking macro images, can I use the viewfinder?

Since the viewfinder sees the subject different than the picture taking lens, we recommend using the LCD monitor screen for taking macro pictures. The image previewed on the LCD monitor will be the exact image that is taken.

What is movie mode function?

The movie mode function allows you to record short movie clips. The recorded movies can be played back or stored as still images using the cameras index function. Please note that the D-390 does not record sound in the movie mode.

Can I use non-Olympus brand xD-Picture Cards?

Yes, third-party brand xD Picture Cards can be used to record images. Please note that an Olympus brand xD card is necessary to use the Panorama function on the camera.

The camera comes packaged with alkaline batteries. Are these the best batteries to use?

No, the suggested batteries to use would be the NiMH batteries. The NiMH batteries are rechargeable, economical and last much longer than alkaline batteries.

Can I use an AC adapter on the camera?

Yes, the optional E-7AU (p/n 200 751) can be used. An AC adapter is especially useful when downloading images to the computer or displaying pictures on a TV. Use of a third-party AC adapter is strongly discouraged.

I can’t remember which settings I’ve changed. How do I reset my camera to the defaults?

There is function called “Mode Reset” in the camera menu. Choose “GO” then press “OK” to reset the camera functions to the default settings.

Do I need a special USB connection cord to download images from my camera to my computer?

Yes, the Olympus CB-USB-4 (p/n 200 776) cable is necessary to connect your camera to the computer. This cable is supplied with your camera.
