Traveling Tips
Owning a digital camera should add value to your vacations and not be a point of frustration. Follow these simple guidelines to have an enjoyable trip while taking great pictures.

Powering Your Camera

batteriesBatteries: It's a good idea to carry extra batteries with you — especially if you won't be able to conveniently recharge your main battery.

  • Use the Lithium-Ion battery specified for your camera. Lithium-Ion batteries can be charged at any time without any adverse effects.

  • The PS-BLS1 battery is used by the E-400, E-410, and E-420 E-System models. The BLM-01 battery is used by our other E-System models.

The Power Battery Holder HLD-2 for the E-1 can hold one BLL-1 battery, while the Power Battery Holder HLD-3 can hold two BLM-01 batteries when used with the E-300.

Charger: Charge your batteries up a day or two before your trip. Since batteries naturally loose a percentage of their charge every day it is not usually a good idea to charge them well in advance of your departure. If you are going to a particularly cold climate, keep your spare battery in your coat pocket to keep it warm and preserve its longevity.

voltage Overseas use of your charger: If the back of your camera charger displays a voltage range of 100V-240V 50-60Hz you can use it in countries that fall within that range. You should find out what type of prong or outlet plug is most common for the country you'll be visiting. Typically, you can find travel kits that include three to six different plug adapters. Check your local luggage and electronics stores for outlet adapters.

Download Devices

PCMCIA Adaptor: A PCMCIA adapter lets you insert an xD or Compact Flash card into your laptop's PC card slot. Images (files) can be dragged and dropped off the card just like any other folder on your computer.

usb reader USB readers\writers: USB readers\writers, like the Olympus MAUSB-200, connect to your PC’s USB port and let you insert the media card and drag-and-drop images from the reader to your hard drive.

Portable data storage device: These devices usually permit you to insert several different types of media cards and transfer images directly to their hard drive. Most offer compact storage capacity in the range of 40GB to 80GB while only being around 5" x 3" and weighing less than 12 ounces. With starting prices of $165 for a 40GB device, you are basically gaining the equivalent of 40 - 1GB cards at $4 a card.

Media Card Care: After downloading your images, keep your card "healthy" by formatting the card in the camera. This completely erases data rather than just allowing it to be overwritten when you erase images.

Protecting Your Camera

Case: There are a wide variety of cases available from several manufactures to protect your equipment on vacation. Cases such as the one pictured are available at the Olympus Store.

If you going on a boat it is a good idea to find a waterproof hard case to store your equipment while not in use. Most of these cases will float in saltwater. Cases of this type also have o-rings that need to be replaced regularly to ensure they remain waterproof.

Underwater Housing: If you want to take your camera underwater Olympus offers an underwater housing for the EVOLT E-330 and EVOLT E-410 DSLR cameras. Each housing is capable of withstanding pressure up to 196ft\60 meters. The PTE-02 will fit the E-330, the PTE-03 will fit the E-410.

Backpack: If you have a lot of equipment, consider a photo backpack or bag that has reconfigurable dividers which let you conveniently arrange your equipment. Some backpacks or bags even have a compartment to protect a laptop.

Lens Care: Your E-system cameras can conveniently remove dust from the imaging sensor themselves via the SuperSonic Wave Filter. However, when you change lenses dust can find itself on to the back or front elements. We recommend obtaining a micro-fiber lens cloth to remove dust or smudges. Some cloths are even 18% gray — valuable in the field for exposure adjustments.

Shooting Tips

sunset pictureScene Modes: While on vacation, don't forget to use the scene modes — included with your Olympus Evolt — designed for all types of situations including sunsets.
Look for a small tabletop tripod to help prevent blur in low light situations.

It's great to take those "standard snapshot" images, but its fun to look for a new angle. Explore fresh views of old standards like the Brooklyn Bridge.

Take a nice panoramic of your vacation scene. Olympus Master Plus or most image editing programs offer the ability to stitch images together.
