MELVILLE, NY, April 29, 2002 -- The Scientific Equipment Group of OLYMPUS
AMERICA, INC. introduces the IX71 inverted research microscope for advanced
live cell applications. The IX71 features a modular frame and optical design
that provides nine access ports for multiple input and output devices, making
the system ready for multi-wavelength, advanced fluorescence applications.
At the heart of the IX71 is a unique, two-tiered, V-shaped optical design that
provides access to nine input/output ports including the new upper and lower
rear ports. Rear ports allow the mounting of a confocal scan head without having
to modify the stage height or fluorescence ray path and also facilitates the
rear mounting of accessories while keeping the sides of the microscope free
for additional equipment. Up to four ports can have simultaneous access to a
primary image. The single reflection V-shaped light path and improved apochromatic
relay lens maintain the highest possible image intensity and optical correction
level, making fluorescence images brighter than ever.
The modular design improves frame stability of the IX71 while an external power
supply reduces heat generation and thermal expansion. These features, together
with its vibration-free operation, make the IX71 well suited for stable, long-term
observations. Another advantage of the IX71 frame is its narrower design and
smaller footprint, facilitating the mounting of accessories where workspace
is at a premium. The frame also incorporates a choice of a 1.6x or 2.0x magnification
changer, offering increased magnification to eyepieces and cameras without having
to change objectives.
Additional optical features, such as an improved straight illuminator, help
increase fluorescence brightness by 20%. The motorized six-position fluorescence
turret enhances operation during multi-color, multi-excitation applications.
A new Relief Contrast condenser and objectives provide contrast and 3D illumination
effects for specimens in plastic vessels. New objectives feature a focus-free
correction collar that maintains objective focus during adjustment. The Olympus
TIRFM illuminator and the 60x, NA:1.45 and the 100x, NA:1.65 objectives offer
the easiest setup and greatest control of the evanescent excitation wave.
