Center Valley, PA, July 16, 2007- Dr. Sanjay Gupta, the chief medical correspondent
for the health and medical unit at CNN, will address the issue of Medicine and
The Media on Monday, July 16 at 1:30 pm, at the San Diego Convention Center. A
brief question and answer session for the press and VIPs will immediately
follow the speech.
The presentation, sponsored by Olympus America Inc., will occur during
the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC)’s annual meeting. The
presentation is open to the media and to industry professionals attending the
annual meeting. AACC’s members develop and perform clinical diagnostic tests
conducted in hospital laboratories, clinics, medical facilities and other
health centers.
Dr. Gupta, a practicing neurosurgeon and an assistant professor of
neurosurgery, plays an integral role in CNN’s medical coverage, which includes
daily stories, the half-hour weekend show House Call with Dr. Sanjay Gupta and
coverage of breaking medical news. Based in Atlanta, he also co-hosts Accent
Health for Turner Private Networks, provides medical segments for the
syndicated version of ER on TNT, contributes health news stories to CNN.com,
writes a column for TIME magazine and recently launched a weekly podcast
called "Paging Dr. Gupta." In his speech, Medicine and The Media, in San
Diego, Dr. Gupta will take a hard look at the media's role in conveying what
can sometimes be frightening information. Using examples from his own work —
such as his post-9/11 reports on anthrax — Dr. Gupta uses his unique expertise
to delve into the question of what the media's role is — and can be — in the
public health arena.
Olympus, whose Life Science Group offers the broadest line of chemistry/
immunochemistry systems for hospital and reference laboratory testing, is
sponsoring the AACC address as part of its Partnership Awards Program. The
program is dedicated to expanding education and partnerships between science
and industry. Along with this presentation, Olympus also provides two
charitable donations to healthcare-related organizations as part of the
Partner Awards program. This year, one donation will support the Dr. Julian
Hoff Lectureship in Neurosurgery at the University of Michigan Medical School,
which is Dr. Gupta’s alma mater.
The AACC’s Van Slyke Foundation (VSF), an organization that supports
clinical laboratory scientists and students, is the second organization
benefiting from the Olympus Partner Awards Program grants this year. "These
awards help support AACC’s vital mission: advancing the practice and
profession of clinical laboratory medicine and expanding its role in improving
healthcare,” said Laurence Demers, Ph.D., Chair of the VSF and Distinguished
Professor of Pathology and Medicine at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center.
This year’s donation will help support education for healthcare professionals
coming to the U.S. from abroad.
“As a leading technology company that delivers solutions in healthcare
and life science, and an organization committed to benefiting society at
large, we are proud to bring Dr. Gupta to San Diego, and to support both the
VSF and the University of Michigan Medical School,” said Michael Argentieri,
Vice President, Sales and Marketing of Diagnostic Systems at Olympus America.
“The Olympus Partnership Award is part of our commitment to education,
scholarship and special programs for healthcare professionals.”
Dr. Gupta’s presentation will begin promptly at 1:30pm in the Grand
Ballroom 20 on the second floor of the San Diego Convention Center, 111 West
Harbor Drive, San Diego, CA. For additional information or a complimentary
press registration to the meeting, contact Peter Patterson at 202-835-8718 or

or Ilene Semiatin at 914-523-0811 on or before the day of the event.)
