Visiopharm® software solutions can effectively address the needs of researchers in various fields including oncology, neuroscience, respiratory research, dermatology, connective tissues and endocrinology.

All of the Visiopharm products are modular and work on the same technology platform. The software modules constitute a complete, scalable toolbox for advanced image analysis, stereology, unattended image acquisition, virtual slide file integration, data management, and automated work flows.

Digital images can be accessed from remote workstations. This makes it possible for a single imaging station to serve several researchers, who can download their studies from a central imaging station to remote analysis stations.

All of the Visiopharm run on the Microsoft Windows platform and are designed to work both as independent and integrated tools with a consistent, high quality user interface.

Whole Slide Image Analysis


VisiomorphDP provides a set of highly specialized tools facilitating key aspects of working with quantitative image analysis and data management.

The image analysis tools are optimized for the specific challenges in whole slide images, and simplify the unambiguous expression of histological end-points in terms of spectral, spatial, morphological, and contextual image properties.

The knowledge and decisions made by expert users are easily stored electronically as user defined protocols. These electronic protocols can easily be loaded and executed by any authorized operator, either on individual ROIs, images or batches of images.

The roles of expert and operator are supported by two different user interface modes. In "Design Mode", the expert user can manipulate all the details of a given analysis protocol to match the exact requirements of a given application. In "Process Mode", a simple user interface gives access to all application specific image analysis protocols in the data library. This allows any operator to perform image analysis procedures without detailed knowledge of the design decisions implemented in the protocols by the domain expert


TissuemorphDP provides a highly specialized tool facilitating key aspects of working with quantitative image analysis for cell population characterization.

The interface allows the users to control detection through simple manual control of sensitivity (positive and negative nuclei, and membrane), and size (positive/negative nuclei and cytoplasm). For nuclei it is possible to create different levels of positivity using the manual control.

The knowledge and decisions made by users are easily stored electronically as user defined protocols. These electronic protocols can easily be loaded and executed by any authorized operator, either on individual ROIs, images or batches of images.


Visiopharm’s HER2-CONNECT module assists the researcher in the scoring of HER2 IHC stained breast cancer specimens by providing continuous readouts of membrane connectivity which are readily translated into classical diagnostic scores.

HER2-CONNECT has been validated for different HER2 assays, including HercepTest from Dako, and Pathway HER2/neu from Ventana.

Clinical validation was performed in collaboration with NordiQC, an independent scientific organization promoting the quality of IHC. The validation study showed a 92.3% concordance with Pathologists manual scoring, and a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 99.2%.


Arrayimager manages the image acquisition, viewing, analysis and scoring stages of stratified specimen profiles across large studies with complex arrays, such as TMAs, micro-titer plates and other array configurations. The user can quickly setup an imaging protocol which will capture high magnification images of the individual cores and store them in the integrated database.

The TMA technology presents methods for screening vast quantities of biomarker data. This enables the evaluation of a number of key determinants in disease states such as detection, prevalence, progression and prognosis across clinical and research assays. Historically, one of the greatest challenges in using TMAs has been the bottlenecks of efficient image acquisition, core specific analysis, and data management. Arrayimager provides solutions for these problems.

Whole Slide Stereology


newCAST Whole Slide Stereology provides a complete set of well-documented stereology tools allowing the researcher to accurately estimate relevant end-points through the use of:

  • Points, lines, counting frames
  • Physical disector and fractionator
  • Local estimators - nucleator and rotator
  • Unique, unbiased method for handling artificial edges

All probes are scientifically well-documented and have been rigorously tested by Prof. Hans Jørgen G. Gundersen and Prof. Jens R. Nyengaard from the University of Aarhus.

With newCAST Whole Slide Stereology software, it is possible to design the optimal setup for research projects, combining well-documented sampling strategies and stereological probes with an increased flexibility.

All collected data (sampling parameters, probe data, and analysis results) are seamlessly recorded for calculation of the final results, and are immediately available for export to MS Excel.

Add-on modules for automation of the physical disector method (Autodisector), for increase of sampling efficiency (Proportionator) are available, and for control of microscope set-ups are available.


Autodisector is an add-on module to newCAST, which makes it possible to work fast and efficiently with the physical fractionator principle by automatically aligning two adjacent sections. The patented Autodisector technology is tissue independent and provides perfectly matched disector pairs on any kind of tissue at any magnification.

The tradional optical disector requires thick, transparent, tissue sections (about 25 microns after tissue preparation). This introduces practical problems such as tissue shrinkage and lack of antibody penetration. The use of thin tissue sections facilitated by the efficient Autodisector effectively eliminates these issues.

The control of multi-slide stages and slide-loaders allows for unattended imaging ranging from a single pair of sections to an entire study.

Disector pairs are stored in the system database and can be loaded into newCAST for off-line counting. This makes it possible to stop and resume work at any time.


The Proportionator is a revolutionary principle introduced by Prof. Gundersen’s group in Aarhus, Denmark. Digital image analysis is employed to guide the sampling of image fields towards regions containing the feature of interest. Bias is avoided by keeping track of the exact empirical sampling probability of each sampled field. With the Proportionator, stereological sampling efficiency has been demonstrated to be improved up to 25 times compared to systematic uniform random sampling in practical applications (Gardi et al, (2008), J. Microsc. 222: 242 - 250).

The Proportionator is similar to the smooth fractionator sampling principle (Gundersen, (2002), J. Microsc. 207: 191 - 210) in that it greatly increases sampling efficiency and end-point precision. The Proportionator is the most efficient stereological sampling principle to date and can be used with any probes to help streamline your quantification objective.
