Cooper Union Announces Olympus America Inc. to Support Education Grant in Humanities

- Olympus Visiting Professorship in the History of Photography Established At Cooper Union

NEW YORK-July 6, 2005 - Dr. George Campbell Jr., president of The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, today announced that Olympus America Inc. is establishing the Olympus Visiting Professorship in the History of Photography at Cooper Union. The humanities class will be taught by Cooper Union's adjunct professor Gail Buckland on the College's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. For three-years, the $25,000 grant will support the Olympus Visiting Professorship, representing the company's strong commitment to fostering innovation and educational opportunities.

The Cooper Union, founded in 1859, is an all-honors college that provides full-tuition scholarships to all undergraduates who are accepted on the basis of merit alone. Dedicated exclusively to preparing students for the professions of architecture, art and engineering, Cooper Union provides an interdisciplinary curriculum where students take foundational courses offered by humanities faculty. The innovations of this pedagogical approach engage students to develop critical thinking skills as well as providing them with a broader perspective to their professional practices.

"We are delighted to welcome Olympus' investment in Cooper Union's distinguished program in Social Sciences and Humanities by supporting a Visiting Professorship. The Olympus name represents leadership in engineering as well as art, two disciplines integral to the college's academic foundation," said George Campbell Jr., The Cooper Union's president.

"As a precision technology leader in healthcare and consumer electronics worldwide, and a company committed to furthering initiatives that benefit society at large, we are proud to support Professor Buckland and The Cooper Union in their endeavors to educate the leaders of tomorrow," said F. Mark Gumz, President and COO, Olympus America Inc. Olympus' commitment to education extends to grants, scholarships, product donations and educational discounts, the Olympus School of Digital Photography for consumers and the Olympus University medical education program for healthcare professionals.

Professor Buckland has a broad experience within and outside of academia; she has authored and collaborated on eleven books of photography history including Fox Talbot and the Invention of Photography and The Magic Image: The Genius of Photography from 1839 to the Present Day (with Sir Cecil Beaton). She is former curator of the Royal Photographic Society and guest curator at numerous American museums.
