Olympus Offers New Motorized Stage and Post/Platform Mounts for Physiology, Imaging

MELVILLE, NY, November 11, 2005 - Researchers who do electrophysiology or confocal microscopy experiments will benefit from a new universal motorized stage now available from Olympus. The stage, along with universal post and platform mounts, was designed for use with Olympus inverted and upright microscopes by Scientifica Ltd, East Sussex, England. The new stage complements Olympusí leading position in the water immersion/electrophysiology microscope market.

The versatile stage can store and recall up to 50 positions in chronological order so the user can roam and then return to a previous site, making it flexible enough to use for many imaging and physiological experiments. The 400mm x 200mm stage provides 50mm of travel in both X and Y axes, allowing room to roam even the largest samples. For researchers using the Olympus DSU spinning disk confocal microscope, there is also a special mounting plate available.

The stage uses high quality crossed roller bearings and an ultra-low noise motor to give smooth and repeatable movement. Once a position is reached, the stage will hold position within 1 micron per hour in controlled environments. The stage has joystick-operated proportional speed control, for travel as slow as 1 micron per second, or as fast as 10mm per second in scanning mode.

A popular alternative to using a fixed platform type mounting system is to use the universal post and platform mounts that are attached to the vibration isolation table built around the microscope to hold manipulators and sample holders. The new post and platform holders provide a solid base that resists environmental interference during experiments. They also offer greater flexibility and ease of set up and use, allowing the user to easily access all parts of the microscope at all times.

The stages are available through Olympus sales representatives and dealers throughout the U.S
