National Clinical Laboratory Advisory Board Provides Insight and Leadership in Field

Center Valley, PA, October 28, 2008 – With the development of new tests and capabilities; the constant challenges of professional staffing and training; changes in workflow, information technology and patient privacy issues; and the national debate on healthcare and its costs, clinical laboratories are under tremendous pressures and there is a need for clearheaded guidance and leadership in bringing laboratories into the next decade.  To meet this need, a panel of national authorities has established the Clinical Laboratory Advisory Board (Clinical LAB).

“The Clinical LAB promotes the flow of information and dialog among thought leaders in various areas of the clinical laboratory. We are seeking best practices, outlooks, considered opinions, and a vision for the future,” said Christopher Higgins of Olympus America Inc., which is sponsoring the Board. “Our nation’s population is aging, more and more testing is being done, and we have great challenges to surmount.  We also have great opportunities. With the growth of molecular medicine and information technologies, the laboratory has the capacity to become the center of early diagnosis and exploration of treatment alternatives.”

The Board convenes three or four times a year to discuss topics set by its members, focusing on issues faced by clinical laboratories, future opportunities and challenges. Selected discussions may be published.  In this way, the Board is able to share the perspectives of the best minds in today’s clinical laboratories with the world of interested clinicians, to help clinical laboratory professionals stay ahead of this rapidly changing field.

Board members include authorities from Quest Diagnostics, the University of Southern California, the VA Hospital System, the Mayo Clinic, The University of Tennessee Medical Center, Henry Ford Medical Center in Detroit, the Lab InfoTech Summit, Methodist Hospital in Houston, Loyola University in Maywood, Illinois, The University of Michigan, the University of Rochester Medical Center, NY, McClain Laboratories in Smithtown, NY, and Olympus.

Olympus is unusual among laboratory providers in that it is deeply involved in the various parts of the clinical laboratory:  it is the leading provider of microscopes and clinical digital imaging systems to clinical laboratories, and is the leading U.S. company offering blood banking equipment; it also offers a comprehensive line of advanced, high-performance chemistry and immunoassay systems and reagents.
